Overview

The aim of this course is to help those working with abrasive wheels do so safely and responsibly following nationally recognised safe practice guidelines. This course is also suitable for those who are responsible – i.e. employers – for the maintenance of abrasive wheels and the grinders they are attached to, to ensure they take all necessary precautions to minimise the risk of accidents in their places of work.

Candidates will undertake an online multiple-choice assessment and will receive a certificate if successful (any certificates from an official awarding body are sent to you via email).

Course Syllabus

  • Course Introduction

Here we introduce the course aims and objectives and set out the format of the course

  • Abrasive Wheels – An Overview

In this Section, we describe what is meant by the term "abrasive wheel" and the two main types of disc that are in general use. We then go on to illustrate the inherent hazards and dangers associated with working with abrasive wheels and the laws that have been put in place to keep people safe when abrasive wheels are in use.

  • Risk Assessment - Employer & Employee Responsibilities

This section outlines the roles and responsibilities of employers and employees regarding the use of abrasive wheels. It centres around the practice of risk assessment and describes such concepts as "5 Steps to Risk Assessment" and "The Hierarchy of Hazard Control".

  • Government Recommendations

In this Section, we outline best practice regarding abrasive wheels, as described in "The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998" (or PUWER ’98), and it’s accompanying "HSE Approved Code of Practice and Guidance".

Obtaining your certificate

You will need to pass a multiple-choice exam at the end of the course in order to gain your accreditation. Once passed, we will send your official certificate by email.
